Serie A Preview: Inter vs. Cagliari

New, comments

The Nerazzurri look to extend their unbeaten streak to five games in domestic play…

Maurizio Lagana

Inter has yet to taste defeat this season and the good times should continue to roll when Cagliari pays a visit to San Siro on Sunday,

The Nerazzurri are coming off a morale-boosting 2-0 win over their previous bogey team Atalanta and received some more good news when tests revealed that Mauro Icardi's injury was not as serious as first thought.

That's music to the ears of Walter Mazzarri as his squad lacks depth upfront and a significant injury to Icardi would have cast a dark cloud over the Beneamata's sunny start to the campaign.

Inter has been lights out at the Meazza so far this term, outscoring the opposition 15-0 en route to three consecutive victories.

Cagliari is unlikely to break the streak with the islanders having secured just one win in their last 27 road clashes in Serie A.

However, the Nerazzurri won't take their guests lightly as they stumbled to two draws against Cagliari last season.

Inter has dropped too many points to teams below them in the standings in recent years and winning these types of matches are imperative in its quest for Champions League football.

Still, all signs are pointing to an Inter victory, which would cap off a September to remember for Mazzarri's men.

THE VITALS

Date: Sunday, September 28

Time: 9:00 AM ET

Venue: Giuseppe Meazza

BATTLE DOSSIER

Inter Probable Formation: 3-5-2: Handanovic; Ranocchia, Vidic, Juan Jesus; Nagatomo, Medel, Kovacic, Hernanes, D'Ambrosio; Osvaldo, Palacio

Cagliari Probable Formation: 4-3-3: Cragno; Pisano, Ceppitelli, Rossettini, Avelar; Crisetig, Conti, Ekdal, Ibarbo; Sau, Cossu

Unavailable For Duty: Icardi will miss the clash after limping off against Palermo on Wednesday.

Operation Blue Tornado: The objective is to show no mercy to less formidable adversaries and finish them off instead of letting them hang around and surprise us with late blows.

Fear Factor: 5: Cagliari is as frightening as going on a few dates and not being able to seal the deal due to amateur mental mistakes in the closing stages of the game.

Enemy Of The State: Andrea Cossu has scored two-thirds of Cagliari's goals and poses a threat whenever he has the ball. He's not afraid to run at defenders and will test Nemanja Vidic and company at the back.

Medal Of Honour: Pablo Dani Osvaldo has done all the right things on and off the battlefield since returning to Italy and his acrobatic exploits made all of the highlight shows midweek.

Likely Outcome: San Siro has been a fortress this year and Cagliari has been brutal on the road lately. Cagliari has lost three games in a row while Inter is firing on all cylinders and the hosts should run out 3-1 winners.
