Back in February, when the acquisition of Jeison Murillo was announced by Inter, many supporters had no idea who he was and were a bit disappointed by the signing of an almost unknown player. Inter needed quality defenders to solve the big defensive issues which plagued the squad last season, and fans thought they needed a much more experienced and well-known name in order to really upgrade our defense.
During the Copa America though, Murillo proved his real value to everyone - lowering all the eyebrows which were raised at his signing in February. He had two particularly great performances: one against Brazil and the other against the Albiceleste - even dominating the superb Lionel Messi. Additionally, he was named "Best Young Player" of the competition. Throughout the tourney, he showed impeccable timing, a unique sense of position, and great aggressiveness, which is exactly what the Nerazzurri need in a defender.
Murillo clearly wanted to start off in the best way possible here in Italy. And what could have been better (for fans) than Murillo cutting his holiday short to join his new teammates during training camp in Brunico? It seem that Murillo wants to be a fan favorite from the very beginning - especially knowing how scrutinous Inter's fan base is - and he is trying to do all he can in order to achieve that.
In today's press conference (watch it on YouTube here) in which he was unveiled to the media, Murillo appeared committed to his words and sure that he will be able to show on the field everything he expressed here.
During the introduction he had some sweet words for Inter:
When the doors of such an important club like Inter open for you, the most important thing is to arrive and take part to all the activities and training of your new team as soon as possible.
When asked about this Instagram post he shared this week, in which he referred to himself as a warrior, he answered:
I feel like one. My role here is to give everything I have for this jersey, for this club.
The kid obviously knows what to say to reach the hearts of the supporters and we all hope he will be able to finally make our defensive line a solid (and maybe even exciting) one after years of mediocrity or worse.
I know full well that it's probably too soon to be in love with a young, inexperienced player of whom I have only seen a few highlights, but I truly am. He offers this side hope that our defense may finally not suck and that Inter may begin a new cycle of glorious seasons and winning years.
He is my new favorite player, and I'd be willing to bet he wins some of your hearts too. That is, if he hasn't already. Have you seen this guy's smile?
