After 37 inspiring minutes at center-back in the Derby Della Madonnina, Gary Medel had to come off with what initially looked to be a knee injury. Unfortunately tests have revealed that his injury is more serious than that. The 29 year old damaged his lateral meniscus and could be out for up to two months.

A lateral meniscus injury means Inter and Medel have two options. They can either have the Chilean undergo surgery or use a typical treatment plan. Surgery would have a longer recovery period but would have a higher likelihood that the problem will not return. There should be more news later which option Medel will choose to undergo.

This is very disappointing news for Inter. Not only has Medel been an integral part of Inter as a defensive midfielder, he showed great promise when playing at center-back partnering with Miranda in the game on Sunday. Until his return Stefano Pioli will have to rely on Jeison Murillo, Andrea Ranocchia, and Marco Andreolli at the back and Geoffrey Kondogbia or Felipe Melo as a shield for the backline. In other words get well asap Medel!
