Inter Milan midfielder Roberto Gagliardini earned a starting nod from Italy U-21 boss Luigi De Biagio.
He helped lead the Azzurrini to a 1-0 win over Germany Sunday in Krakow, Poland and a spot in the European U-21 Championship semifinals.
Because Denmark held the Czech Republic at bay and Italy’s win over Germany — thanks to a 31st minute strike by Inter target and current Fiorentina forward Federico Bernardeschi — Italy went over Germany to become winners of Group C and earn a spot in the semifinals.
Italy will take on Spain in the first semi-final game in Poland while Germany — the wild card winner — will play England in the second semi-final. Both games will be on Tuesday.
Gagliardini came on as a substitute in Italy’s 3-1 loss to the Czech Republic on Wednesday. He replaced Bernardeschi in the 75th minute of the loss in Tychy.
