Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez had an opportunity to impress his national team coach in Argentina after being named to its friendly squad during the international break.

Now, that has been put on hold.

Martinez, who played in the first two matches of the Serie A season for Luciano Spalletti, will not be included in Argentina’s squad for a pair of friendlies to be played in the United States due to a calf injury.

Additionally, Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, AC Milan’s Gonzalo Higuain and Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero have also been left off the squad. Those exclusions meant that Martinez would have had a prime opportunity to show his worth to Argentina interim coach Lionel Scaloni.

”Lautaro Martinez was subjected to studies in his left calf and it has been decided that he will not participate in the next two friendlies,” the Argentina national team confirmed via their official Twitter account.

Martinez was included in Argentina’s provisional squad for the 2018 World Cup but, like Mauro Icardi, did not travel to Russia with the rest of the team.

With regard to Icardi, reports suggest it is doubtful that he will play with the national team in friendlies against Guatamala and Columbia in the United States.

It is still unclear as to whether Martinez will stay with the rest of the team in the United States or return to Italy to resume treatment for the injury.
