It’s not the most outrageous rumor out there, but it would certainly be interesting if it came true.

Italian and British media is reporting today that Inter Milan could make a move to bring midfielder Mateo Kovacic back to the Giuseppe Meazza after his loan deal with Chelsea is up this summer.

Kovacic has been on loan at Stamford Bridge this season which was part of a swap for Thibaut Courtois.

Talk is that Chelsea may want to make the deal permanent at the end of the season, but there is no buyout clause attached to the loan deal with Real Madrid, making Kovacic open once the season is over.

Kovacic left the San Siro in 2015 for Real Madrid but found himself out of the plans for current Real Madrid manager Julien Lopetegui. Kovacic was with the Nerazzurri from 2013 after making a switch from Dinamo Zagreb.

Now, Real Madrid could elect to bring Kovacic back to Spain at the conclusion of the loan deal, but they could also sell the Croatian international with Inter being a strong prospect as fellow Croatian internationals Ivan Perisic and Sime Vrsaljko already on the roster.

Tuttosport reported that because there is no purchase option on Kovacic’s loan deal, Inter Milan management could be prepared to offer him a return to Italy.

With Chelsea apparently hunting the services of American Christian Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund, it could open a roster spot if they were to part with Kovacic.

This season, Kovacic has appeared in 24 matches for Chelsea in all competitions, notching just two assists. He played in 97 matches for Inter Milan, scoring eight times to go along with 11 assists.

Kovacic could be an interesting pickup for Inter as they would add another Croatian international to the squad — barring they don’t part ways with Perisic anytime soon.

Inter did make some overtures to obtain the services of Luka Modric last year, to no avail.
