Lazio vs Inter Milan: Match Preview

A wild start of Antonio Conte’s second season in charge doesn’t seem to be calming down just yet. Inter Milan, fresh off 4-3 and 5-2 victories against Fiorentina and Benevento, respectively, is set for a visit to the Stadio Olimpico and Lazio. The league pauses for two weeks following these games for a rather inopportune international break.

Inter is tied for 1st on six points with Napoli, Atalanta, Verona, and Milan. That means just about nothing this early in the season, though, so don’t put any sort of bet on a Verona title challenge, no matter how tempting. What you could bet on, though, is goals in this upcoming Sunday fixture. The Nerazzurri have scored a league high tally of 9 in just two games, but the 5 shipped in the opposite direction have dampened the mood. Perhaps the possible introduction of the first choice back-three (Bastoni, Vrij, Skriniar) into the starting eleven will solidify the backline. It may take a bit longer to rediscover the defensive form of last season, however.

Lazio too has seen goals fly in so far, but not in the direction it would prefer. A 2-0 away win to Cagliari kick-started the campaign, but a midweek 4-1 demolition at the hands of Atalanta brought things crashing back to earth. Ciro Immobile, though, has already opened his account and looks to be as much of a problem as he was last season. Lazio’s starting lineup is also practically unchanged, and the only transfer window moves (both in and out) have been in terms of depth. 24-year-old Andreas Pereira from Manchester United looks to be the biggest signing, but he likely won’t be available for selection after completing his transfer midweek.

Prediction: Lazio 2-2 Inter Milan

The high scoring theme of play we’ve enjoyed (?) so far will continue, but this time Inter won’t be able to walk away with the full three points. Romelu Lukaku, Lautaro Martinez, and Achraf Hakimi will keep up their stellar form, but Immobile will strike back, notching a brace as he looks to build off a record-breaking 2019/20.
