Inter claimed its nineteenth Scudetto in dominant fashion, finishing twelve points ahead of its closest rival and losing just three times all season. Some of the key figures behind the Nerazzurr’s 91-point season are now receiving the recognition they deserve. France Football announced Friday that Lautaro Martinez and Nicolo Barella have been nominated for the Ballon d’Or, an annual award to the best male football player over the previous year. Ex-Inter striker Romelu Lukaku also made the thirty-person shortlist alongside four other current or recent Serie A players (Giorgio Chiellini, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Simon Kjaer, and Leonardo Bonucci).
Inter released a statement on Lautaro and Barella’s nomination.
MILAN – Nicolo Barella and Lautaro Martinez have been named on the 30-man shortlist for the 2021 edition of the Ballon d’Or.
The prestigious award was established by France Football in 1956.
Barella and Martinez both played integral roles in Inter’s 19th Serie A title win in the 2020/21 season. Barella then starred as Italy won the European Championship, while Martinez helped Argentina to Copa America glory.
The awards ceremony will be held in Paris on 29 November.
We’ll have to wait until November 29th to see if either of Inter’s representatives came out on top in the voting but just being a finalist is worth bragging rights on its own.
Congrats Lautaro and Nicolo!
