Is the young midfielder first in line to replace Handanovic?

Inter’s next capitano is going to be Nicolo Barella, at least according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The man who has his hand on the pulse of transfers across European football revealed on CBS Sports’ Que Golazo Podcast that the Nerazzurri’s first choice to replace Samir Handanovic as captain is Barella. Other options for the armband include Romelu Lukaku, Milan Skriniar, or Marcelo Brozovic but it appears as though Barella is preferred.

Barella, 24, has already made 74 appearances for Inter since a 30 million move from Cagliari. He served as captain at the Sardinians when he was a mere 20 years of age, so this wouldn’t be a brand-new role for Barella. The heart of Inter’s midfield, the Italian already serves an indispensable role under Antonio Conte and has become one of the best midfielders in Serie A. The sight of his limitless energy sending him flying throughout the center of the pitch has become a hallmark of Inter matches, and he’s chipped in 7 goals and 18 assists as well. Barella, who comes from an Interisti family, clearly loves the club and seems like he would be part of it for years to come, characteristics you love to see in a future captain.

What do you think? Is Barella the man for the job? Let us know in the comments.
