A few takeaways from this bitter draw

Inter Milan were hard done by Torino last night after losing a two-goal lead to finish with a draw. This leaves Inter with just one point from their first two games when they probabaly should have had five more, however, there is no need to panic just yet.

After the culmination of the 2017-18 season, one of the criticisms I had of Luciano Spalletti was his rigidity. For large tracts of the season, the formation and ideology remained the same, with a few experiments in between. So it was a welcome surprise for me to see Spalletti try out a 3 at the back. Whether this was a bold statement by Spalletti or just a necessity out of the available options, most of the conclusions I drew from this game were from the formation that Spalletti chose to deploy.

Asamoah and Vrsaljko looked great

I was probably the only member of the Serpents team who had an issue with the signing of Šime Vrsaljko, the reason for that being I felt that Vrsaljko would not be able to contribute much on the offensive end. But I will take that back if Spalletti decides to continue with this formation. I’m saying this now, Kwadwo Asamoah and Vrsaljko are good full-backs, but are great wing-backs. They both possess incredible work-rates and are immensely beneficial if we continue to play with a formation that depend on wing-backs for providing width. They both looked great in this game, and we can only expect better performances in the future.

Politano given freedom in the final third

Matteo Politano was handed a free-role and he put in an incredible shift, it seemed as if Politano was unshackled and was doing everything perfectly. Either one of Vrsaljko or Asamoah were caught up in defence and you needed someone to provide width? Need a pin-point ball from a set-piece? Need somebody to link play between the double pivot and Icardi? Need someone to defend the flank incase Torino doubles up? If you had any of those questions against Torino, Politano was your answer. He was the MOTM for me.

Milan Skriniar uncomfortable

I felt Milan Skriniar looked really uncomfortable playing as a left-center back, Milan is unable to play those cross-court diagonals and line breaking passes with his left-foot and if he tries to switch to his right foot, it takes up too much time and Torino can plug the gaps. Milan was such an integral part of our buildup last season and that was due to him being the right sided centre-half. Maybe Spalletti should ponder about this for the upcoming match.

Vecino should not play as a part of the double pivot

Marcelo Brozović and Matías Vecino were part of the double pivot , this meant that once Walter Mazzarri made some tweaks in the second half, the duo got overrun in midfield and spent most of their time defending , it didn’t help that Spalletti was too conservative and too late with his changes. With Brozovic spending most of his effort on the defensive side of things, we lost our ace midfield controller and Torino got a firm hold on the game. If Spalletti wishes to continue with this formation, he must partner Brozovic with Radja Nainggolan or even Roberto Gagliardini, simply because starting Vecino holds back Brozovic and the entire team along with him.

Should Spalletti place a little more trust in Roberto Gagliardini?

Torino’s questionable tactics

Despite playing similar formations in the first half, Politano and Perisic were afforded a whole lot of space in the final third. Why Mazzari is asking the Torino players to mark set pieces in a zonal manner when his players are clearly not used to it is beyond me. De Vrij capitalised on this and we could have attacked Torino through crosses and set-pieces. If not for Andrea Bellotti’s superb first touch, Torino may have never got their first goal. The reason I’m not happy with Inter’s performance is because we were playing a team that had an even worse performance. But despite all these negative points, there were positives as well and I urge every Inter fan not to panic yet and trust the team and the management.

Stefan De Vrij

The Dutchman opened his account in the colours of black and blue. This could have been two goals in two matches for Stefan and all Inter fans will be hoping that he scores plenty for our team. Not since the days of Marco Materazzi have we had central defenders threatening to score on a regular basis and luckily this seems to be a facet of De Vrij’s game. He could hardly be blamed for the goals, but, at the same time he is part of the defense that allowed two of them in after leading 2-0. De Vrij won’t go home happy because of that.

The same reasons we have been raving about Kwadwo Asamoah can be attributed to Sime. One could be remiss for not realizing that this was his debut.
Former Inter great Beppe Bergomi stated that - “Inter have done well [in the transfer window] but lack a set piece specialist.” - well if we were to make the judgement from this display Matteo would have proved Bergomi wrong. However, the final verdict will have to be made at the end of the season. For now we can be happy that we have an Italian performing well at Inter. His assist for Stefan De Vrij was a peach but let’s not forget that he also set up Ivan Perisic with what should have been the game winning goal. He keeps on going from strength to strength and long may it continue.

And things were going so well …

If the first 45 minutes were any indicator, Inter Milan had the game well in-hand thanks to first half strikes from Ivan Perisic and Stefan De Vrij.

Unfortunately, football has two halves and Torino made the necessary offensive changes to force a stronger attack which yielded two goals and a 2-2 draw with the Nerazzurri at the San Siro Sunday.

In the first half, Inter controlled possession by a margin of nearly 65-35, leaving Torino with little opportunity to do much of anything more than scramble to stop Internazionale’s ball movement and attack on offense.

After being dominated in the first half, Torino came out swinging a bit harder in the second half as Tomás Rincon gave Torino its best effort in the 50th minute, but Samir Handanovic was up to the task and dove away to collect the shot.

The changes at halftime paid off for Torino when Andrea Belotti beat Danilo D’Ambrosio and was able to move Handanovic out of position to score in the 56th minute, cutting Internazionale’s lead to 2-1.

Nearly nine minutes later, Matteo Politano had a brilliant move on attack and nearly found Mauro Icardi streaking up the middle, but Politano’s cross sailed wide of Icardi’s dive in front of goal.

Then, in the 68th minute, Inter had difficulty clearing out Torino’s attempts and they paid the price after Soualiho Meité came from outside the area and buried a shot right past Handanovic in the bottom left of the goal to level the game.

It marked a complete turnaround of fortune from the first half to the second.

Inter dominated possession to start the game and it paid off in the seventh minute when Perisic drilled a shot into the back of the net off a cross from Icardi.

The Nerazzurri continued to close off Torino as the midfield combination of Marcelo Brozovic, Kwadwo Asamoah (who finally moved to the left) and Matias Vecino were able to eliminate space and block off any substantial attack by Torino early on.

Politano nearly got in on the scoring action and Icardi almost picked up his second assist of the game, but, in the 15th minute, the former Sassuolo man didn’t put enough on his header and Icardi’s cross went off Politano’s head and right to Salvatore Sirigu.

Defensively, Internazionale swarmed any potential attack by Andrea Beloti and Iago Falque. In fact, neither player had more than a few touches in the first 25 minutes of the match.

Politano’s set piece ability paid off in the 32nd minute after his in-swinging shot went right around Falque and off the head of Stefan De Vrij and into the back of the net to give Inter a 2-0 lead before halftime.

Torino’s only offensive threat of the first half came in the 40th minute, but a shot on by Lorenzo Di Silvestri was cleanly handled by Internazionale goalkeeper Samir Handanovic. A few minutes before halftime, Falque had a set piece from just outside the area, but his delivery went wide of the goal and presented no danger.

Spalletti and company look to get back on track.

After a very poor performance last week, Inter Milan heads home with zero points on the table. The club looks to bounce back in front of the home supporters. The match against Sassuolo clearly showed the squad’s weak points. Some of these problems were resolved in the second half, although the breakthrough never came.

Other issues with the lineup should be resolved in this game. Expect Luciano Spalletti to field the strongest team that he can in this game, eliminating the liabilities. The best way to follow up the disappointment of last week is with a strong statement win this week. With the pressure on, the Inter faithfull will be looking for a fired up Spalletti on the sideline and a motivated squad.

Anything less could result in heartbreak again. Inter will deploy a 4-2-3-1 again in this match, with a few new faces entering the fold.

Probable Starting Lineup: Handanovic; Vrsaljko, Skriniar, Miranda, Asamoah; Gagliardini, Brozovic; Politano, Martinez, Perisic; Icardi.

Radja Nainggolan looks ready to make his Inter debut and put some life into the midfield. His health continues to improve, but he will likely still start on the bench. In a news conference today, Spalletti stated,

“He is called up but we have to be careful. There will be the supervision of the medical staff of Dr. Volpi who has an assessment based on the accident. There are risks, we will evaluate tomorrow and during the match what to do.”

The Belgian was sorely missed in the season opener, as the midfield lacked any creativity. The Nerazzurri are hoping his addition to the lineup will also improve the play of those around him, particularly Marcelo Brozovic and Lautaro Martinez. Ninja should make an instant impact if and when he comes onto the pitch.

Fellow newcomer, Sime Vrsaljko, looks to make his first appearance in the black and blue as well. The Croatian back may get the start this week due to his valuable contribution on the attacking end. If Vrsaljko and Matteo Politano can establish a good connection, that right side will turn into a cross factory.

Look for Kwadwo Asamoah to start at the Left back after Dalbert Henrique’s terrible performance against Sassuolo. Rounding out the Defense, Milan Skriniar will make his season debut after a stellar 17/18 campaign.

The attack will likely look the same as last week, with several options rotating in throughout the match. These changes will give the “true Inter” everyone is waiting for a chance to shine against Torino.

Midfielder Joao Mario continues to be a hot topic in the media this past week. After several transfer approaches, the latest by Turkish side Besiktas, it seems that the Portuguese International may be set for an Inter Milan stay.

The player is clearly out of favor with Spalletti and the fans. After becoming one of the biggest flops in recent history, is it possible for JMario to earn back acceptance of the club. It is unlikely that he will be called up for this match, but it is something to continue monitoring.

Torino is heading into this match coming off of a loss themselves. The 1-0 opener against Roma is not an ideal way to start the season, but they looked poised and up to the challenge.

After Inter’s shortcomings, Torino have to be thinking 3 points this matchup also. With the dangerous Andrea Belotti at the head of the attack, Inter may have to score several times to clinch a victory. The Nerazzurri are winless in the last three meetings with Torino, which can not be understated. Walter Mazzarri’s squad will be fearless coming into Milan. Facing adversity is nothing new for Inter, but this is an important match to avoid full-on panic. After the high hopes of the preseason and being hit with a quick reality check, this game is a must-win. Forza Inter. Prediction: Inter 2-1 Torino
