I was really hoping that I would have only positive things to say post-match about Inter Milan against Parma but here we are again.

Possession needs more end product

I don’t want to hide it, I really like possession based football. I mean like a lot. Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Manchester City and the Spanish national team are examples of teams that have all won trophies playing possession football. I think it is a sure way to keep the opposition un-involved for extended periods of a game while establishing dominance. The more you score during this time the easier it becomes.

Once you’re up a few goals you defend with the ball. It is the direct opposite of the old-school Italian mentality. For some, holding the ball for this long in a game can be interpreted as cowardly, but some people also think the Italian style of scoring a goal and closing up shop is cowardly. It is all down to interpretation. I admit, I prefer to see Spalletti trying to adopt this style of play at Inter over most of the football we have witnessed the last couple seasons, however, for this approach to work, the team needs to both create many opportunities and score their chances. The longer it takes for this to happen the more pressure they put on themselves. Inter had 73% possession, 20 shots taken and 7 on target. They really needed to do something with those numbers.

Of all the new arrivals Keita Balde is taking longest to warm-up

One could make a strong argument that of all the incoming transfers Keita Balde was somewhere near the top of the list in terms of expectations. Every other player that we have brought in has demonstrated to us what we can expect from them and shown character. Keita has Serie A experience, and there is still time, but he has been very vocal in the media about what he wants to prove to us, it is time for him to prove it. I’m not sure if he registered a shot on target in this match.

Mauro Icardi’s finishing worrisome

I have been watching Icardi since he arrived at Inter. When he’s not scoring it usually is because of lack of service. It has become a recent trend that he has been missing chances that he would usually put away. Some of them have been easy, some not been easy, heck many of them were difficult but it doesn’t mean that he doesn’t usually score them. It has only been two and a half matches so no need to panic or be overly critical just yet. There was once an analogy that stated: if a goal was a drop of blood in the ocean - Icardi would sniff it out. Let’s hope we get our shark back soon.

Parma’s goal came against the run of play

2 shots taken, 2 shots on target yields 1 goal. Moments before Dimarco’s finish, which happened to be both cracking and ironic (considering we loaned him to Parma) I sat down on my couch thinking.

Wow, Milan Skriniar and Stefan de Vrij look so comfortable. I mean nothing troubled them before that goal, and hardly anything troubled them after. Inter dominated the match and it genuinely looked as if it was just a matter of time before we would score. As Spalletti said himself, we simply conceded an extraordinary goal. I have to hand it to Parma, they blocked several shots that would have caused panic in their defence. In the end we don’t want to make too many excuses but goals like these, these goals out of nowhere used to get scored on us a lot in the past, again we must turn to hope and pray that too many of these goals don’t appear out of the blue.

Dalbert had a good match

Maybe i’m really searching for positives here but Dalbert Henrique had a good match. Before he came to Inter he was rumoured to be this exciting attacking prospect but actually on the contrary I find when he’s had good games it has been down to his defensive abilities. His speed was supposed to be one of his best characteristics, yet, I have seen little of it especially in the attacking phase of play. But he played a handful of decent crosses today and was not exposed as we saw over pre-season and the first game or two.

Inter player Dimarco pushes newly-promoted squad to 1-0 win.

It always seems to happen that Inter Milan win the games they aren’t supposed to win but come through and dominate the games they are expected to lose.

On Saturday, Inter loanee Federico Dimarco drilled a shot from distance past Samir Handanovic to lead newly-promoted Parma to a 1-0 win over the Nerazzurri at the San Siro.

Parma defeats Inter, 1-0 at the San Siro. It’s the first win for Parma over Inter at the San Siro since 1999.

What in the world? So much for those really cool looking third kits.

I just want to point out that Parma was a team filing for bankruptcy just three years ago.

Not really the way you want to usher in your first Champions League campaign in six years as Inter Milan will host Tottenham Hotspur in the first match of the group stage Tuesday.

That was the reason why Luciano Spalletti elected to rest Mauro Icardi, Kwadwo Asamoah and Matteo Politano Saturday.

The rest was short-lived as all three came into the match in the second half for what ended up being no reason at all.

Ivan Perisic nearly put Inter ahead late in the first half, but his corner kick delivery went wide of both Milan Skriniar and Danilo D’Ambrosio.

In the second half, it was Dimarco that nearly gave the Nerazzurri a chance as he appeared to have handled a clearance off the line, but the official decided no call was the best option.

Later in the half, it was Dimarco who drilled a shot from at least 30 yards out that found the back of the net and gave Parma their first Serie A win of the season.

Inter continued to pepper the Parma defense, but it was to no avail.

Now, a dejected Internazionale will have two days to recoup before welcoming the London side on Tuesday.

Club football is finally back. Hooray!

With the first international break of the 2018-19 season now behind us it’s time to dive back into the world of club football, which for Inter Milan means that things are about to get very serious and very hectic.

The Nerazzurri did not start their Serie A campaign in the manner that supporters had expected, mustering just four points in their opening three league matches, but there is no time for Luciano Spalletti and co. to dwell on the past as they are about to begin a tricky run of seven fixtures in 23 days.

Of those seven fixtures, the one that most are talking about at the moment is Tuesday evening’s match at home to Tottenham, as it will officially sanction Inter’s return to the UEFA Champions League after a six-year absence - but before that prestigious occasion arrives, the players must ensure that they do not lose further ground in Serie A by taking care of business against Parma at San Siro.

On paper there is little to suggest that Roberto D’Aversa’s side are capable of causing an upset this weekend - this is their first Serie A campaign in four seasons and they have taken just one point from their opening three games - but the combative performance they put in against Juventus just before the international break, complete with a goal for summer signing Gervinho on his home debut, should serve as a reminder that this match will not be a cakewalk.

Inter cannot afford to drop more points this weekend.

If Inter aren’t fully focused on the task at hand here then we could be in for a nasty surprise, so let’s hope they aren’t thinking about the Tottenham match already. It is precisely the kind of thing that I would pessimistically expect this team to do, though, so I am somewhat wary of what might happen tomorrow.

As far as team news is concerned, everything points towards Spalletti continuing with the 4-2-3-1 system following the win over Bologna two weeks ago. Quite who will be starting up front, however, is a little less clear.

Mauro Icardi appears to have shaken off whatever issue forced him to sit out the game at the Dall’Ara and has been included in the match-day squad, but there is a chance that he will be protected ahead of the Spurs game, so Keita Balde could well lead the line again.

That aside, the biggest question marks are probably in defence. Reports on Friday have suggested that Spalletti may prefer Joao Miranda ahead of Stefan de Vrij at centre-back, as he begins to rotate his squad, while on the right-hand side Sime Vrsaljko’s conditions will also need to be verified after he was forced off during the first half of Croatia’s match against Spain on Tuesday.

Regardless of who gets picked, though, Inter are more than good enough to pick up all three points here. And they need to pick up all three points here, because they’ve already slipped up twice this season.

If everyone is concentrated and we speed up our possession in the opponent’s half - something the pitch at San Siro should help us with, as it will be in a much better condition than Bologna’s pitch was a fortnight ago - then we shouldn’t have too much of a scare here. Football can be weird, though, so personally I’m taking nothing for granted.
