Inter look to Zenit St. Petersburg for reinforcements

Roberto Mancini could pursue Ezequiel Garay and Axel Witsel but faces stiff competition.

Despite the recent gung-ho endeavors for a new winger, Piero Ausilio and the rest of Inter management do have other targets they are looking at this summer. The midfield and defense could use a little upgrading, and it seems that Inter might be looking to Russian side Zenit St. Petersburg to fulfill both of those requirements.

In terms of upgrading the defense the newest target is Ezequiel Garay. The 29 year old is not a part of Argentina’s Copa America squad and is looking for a new club to play for. Garay could come in to replace Jeison Murillo if he is sold this summer, but if he was willing to take more of rotation role in the team he could serve as the first choice backup to Miranda and Murillo when Ranocchia leaves and if JJ goes as well. Right now it seems that Inter would face the most serious competition for his signature from Manchester United and Arsenal.

For the longest time Roberto Mancini’s midfield target has been Yaya Toure. The new Chinese investment made it seem more likely that he would get his wish but an alternate name is now being proposed and I think it is one that fans might be more happy to see. Axel Witsel has recently emerged as a possible option for Inter and though his transfer fee would undoubtedly be more than Toure’s, his lower wages plus six year age gap makes him more valuable in my mind. Inter is not the only Serie A club after Witsel, both Juventus and Napoli have been linked to the 27 year old and Witsel’s agent is believed to be meeting with Napoli soon. If Mancini is truly interested in the Belgian midfielder the club will need to move quickly.
