Whenever I get sad or angry about something Inter does I can always be comforted in the knowledge that no matter what happens, Inter won’t be the most dysfunctional club in the city of Milan. Whether it’s a scandalous or corrupt president, failed sales of the club, making former legends managers prematurely and then discarding them when there aren’t immediate results, failed stadium plans, or transfers stolen right from under their noses AC Milan has provided a good dose of entertainment in recent years. Even now when the club is trying to get it’s act together it is happening in comedic fashion.
Just like Inter has already done, Milan is about to be sold to Chinese owners. The impending new owners took a look at Milan’s current directors and (correctly) thought they need to clean house in order to create something like a functional club. In order to do that they started by hiring ex-Inter director Marco Fassone as their General Director, the man who was shipped out by Thohir reportedly because he thought Fassone wasn’t necessary and he wanted to give Piero Ausilio and Michael Bolingbroke more responsibilities. Fassone tried to get Ausilio to join him on the red side of the city, but Suning recognized his value at the club plus Ausilio seemingly had no desire to leave so the two parties quickly agreed to an upcoming contract renewal to get Fassone to leave him alone. After that failure Fassone decided to offer Inter's chief scout Andrea Mirabelli a big promotion if he switches sides to become Sporting Director and also reportedly is going to add former Inter staff members Andrea Romeo and Marianna Mecacci to his management team.
It’s not hard to imagine that Milan fans might not be happy about the influx of former Inter staffers, and that assumption is correct. Fassone has been trying to add a Milan legend to the staff in order to appease the fans but that search as been less than fruitful so far. Demetrio Albertini sent out a tweet stating his disapproval at the club’s additions, while Alessandro Costacurta said that Fassone better not call him. Andriy Shevchenko joked to La Gazzetta dello Sport that with all these former Inter staffers coming maybe they should just change the club’s name.
So with the new owner’s takeover not even complete yet, Milan fans and legends are already annoyed with Fassone and his crew of Inter discards. Erick Thohir quickly learned to listen to fans back when the whole Guarin-Vucinic trade was impending, so maybe the incoming Milan owners might make that same realization quickly and have Fassone stop trying to hire people Inter didn’t want. Then again if they were to start becoming competent I would lose one of my easiest sources of comedy. So please, never change AC Milan.
