“We dedicate the win to Casiraghi. This is an important group, we had a lot of confidence and this was a team win. The teams that I train are strong teams, we’re always competitive and we’ve been able to do some important work but we can’t lose focus now because we already have a match with Roma coming up on Saturday,” said Inter manager Stefano Vecchi, to the team’s website.
Both teams went back and forth in the first half with neither gaining an advantage.
It was Fiorentina who dominated the attack in the first 45 minutes with several shots testing the Inter defense.
In the 46th minute, Fiorentina winger Riccardo Sottil headed home the first goal of the game off a header from Josip Maganjic.
Later, in the 79th minute, Inter was able to equalize when Belkheir hit pay dirt off a nice move from Tommaso Brignoli. Inter continued to pressure on offense when Marco Sala tried his luck, but his shot was poked away by Fiorentina goalkeeper Simone Ghidotti.
In the first half of extra time, the Nerazzurri finally got the winner they were looking for. Ghidotti came off his line to make a stop, but Vergani placed a left-footed shot into the corner of the net to get the win.
Inter’s defense was able to hold off the Viola’s pressure in the second half of extra time to claim its eighth Viareggio Cup in club history.
The Nerazzurri will return to league play when they host Roma on Saturday.
