The Serie A world woke up Sunday to the tragic news of the death of Fiorentina captain Davide Astore. The 31-year-old was found dead in his hotel room as the Viola were preparing to face Udinese.

First, all of us at Serpents of Madonnina send our condolences to Astori’s family and to the entire Viola family. Inter Milan also sent out its condolences via its website:

“Football means passion, bravery, effort and joy. This was the Fiorentina captain Davide Astori, a friend to so many of his peers who work every Sunday to make football special.

Because of this, we express deep sorrow at the shocking news of his passing and we stand together with his family and colleagues at Fiorentina.

The ownership, directors, team and Nerazzurri fans are all united in this time of immense sadness.”

As a sign of respect, Serie A and Serie B have postponed all matched slated for Sunday, including the Derby della Madonnina. According to Football-Italia.net, the league will come together Monday and discuss when Sunday’s games will be made up.

According to our friends at Viola Nation, Astori was with Cagliari until moving to AS Roma in the 2014-15 season. The next season he began his run at Fiorentina which included a fifth-place finish and the team’s qualification for the Europa League.

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon had other touching words abotu Astori:

“Hello dear Asto, I hardly publicly expressed a thought about a person, because I have always thought that the beauty and the uniqueness of relationships, mutual respect and affection, were not exploited or thrown into the meal to those who do not have the delicacy to respect certain ties.

In your case, I feel I am making an exception to my rule, because you have a young wife and family members who are suffering, but especially your little girl, deserves to know that her father was in all respects a perfect person, a great perfect person.

You were the best expression of an ancient, surpassed world, in which values such as altruism, elegance, education and respect for others, were masters. Congratulations indeed, you were one of the best sports figures in which I came across. RIP.”

In the 2016-17 season, new coach Stefano Pioli named Astori the team’s captain and he featured in all but one of the team’s fixtures. In all, he made 109 appearances for Fiorentina and recently signed a new deal that would have kept him in Florence through 2022.

Astori was a fierce competitor and a special player. He will be missed.
