Players will be anxiously waiting by the phone in the coming weeks to learn of national team call-ups for March friendly matches.
One player who may not be getting a call from anybody is Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi.
Amid recently issues between Icardi and the club – ranging from Icardi being stripped of the captaincy, his refusal to play and an injury that no one can seem to locate – Icardi could be left off Argentina’s national team list in March.
Mundalbiceleste is reporting that Lionel Messi could make a return to the national team while Boca Juniors striker Dario Benedetto could also earn a spot.
TyC Sports suggested Lionel Scaloni may also pass on goalkeeper Sergio Romero and Angel Di Maria for March friendlies with Venezuela and Morocco.
But, Icardi may not be as big of a surprise.
First, Icardi struggled to earn a call-up for whatever reason. Be it is issues with Messi surrounding Wanda Nara and Maxi Lopez or whether Argentina just didn’t want to call him up. For those of you who are not aware of the issues with Lopez, Icardi and Nara had an affair while she and Lopez were an item, so there’s that.
Now, with an “injury,” contract issues and essentially telling Inter Milan officials to take a long walk off a short pier, it would not be surprising if Scaloni decided he didn’t want the drama to infect the Argentina camp.
I can’t say as I would blame him for that.
Heck, a lot of Inter fans are just about fed up with it. And, with the way the team has played in response to the drama, we might be like Argentina and better off without him.
Argentina will take on Venezuela on March 22 and Morocco on March 26. The call-up list for Argentina is expected to be released on March 3.
