It could be that Luciano Spalletti is on the way out.

Reports in Italy suggest that Inter Milan CEO Beppe Marotta has decided to move on from manager Luciano Spalletti at the conclusion of the season, regardless of how Inter finish.

Calciomercato reported that Marotta has already made contact with former Italy national team and Chelsea boss Antonio Conte and both parties have agreed that Conte will be the next manager for the Nerazzurri.

In fact, since Conte is now free of his legal obligations to Chelsea, he has “asked to be updated in recent months on everything that is happening inside the club.

Along with agreeing to join Inter in the summer, Conte has also suggested he is fine with the club selling Argentinian striker Mauro Icardi at the conclusion of the season as “the manager does not see him as fundamental to Inter.”

With that, Conte and Marotta have agreed to pursue a lesser expensive striker like AS Roma’s Edin Dzeko.

The report goes on to suggest that Inter will start the bidding for Icardi at his release clause price of €110 million. Juventus have already reportedly offered €50 million, which will not be enough.

Inter could lower the price for Icardi, but only if other players were included to enhance any deal.

Conte left Chelsea last summer, after winning the FA Cup with the club. In his two seasons at Samford Bridge, Conte also won the Premier League title.

The other named linked to Inter Milan is former manager Jose Mourinho. The former Manchester United manager led Inter to its only treble during the 2009-10 season.

Sky Italia reported that Inter President Steven Zhang has talked with Mourinho about returning to the Giuseppe Meazza, but both Zhang and Marotta prefer Conte.

“I can confirm that Mourinho has spoken with Zhang but from what I understand there is no basis for him to return. When you speak about Mou’s demands, you must always remember that he is not someone who has won a lot since leaving Inter,” said Sky Italia journalist Mariangela Pira, in a tweet. “From what I was told, Zhang likes Mourinho but there is nothing to be done. I would not be surprised if this was an independent initiative Marotta because they do not respect this kind of hierarchy. They value Conte very much and I also know that he is about to sign. For Marotta it is already done.”

If the reports are true, it is likely that Mourinho could still return to coaching after being sacked by Manchester United, but it could be with a Ligue 1 club like Lyon or Monaco.
