Inter Milan was able to keep their third place standing in Serie A following a 2-0 win Monday over already-relegated Chievo Verona.

Inter got a first-half goal from Matteo Politano and a late goal from Ivan Perisic to secure the win.

With the win, Inter moves one point above Atalanta in third while AC Milan and AS Roma are both two points back of Atalanta, leaving a big race for the last two Champions League positions for Serie A as Juventus and Napoli have already clinched two of the four positions.

Inter started the match with a lackluster performance.

Needing to secure three points, the Nerazzurri failed to press its attack until the latter stages of the first half.

But, because Chievo was content in sitting back on defense, Inter was able to secure some scoring opportunities.

In the 15th minute, Milan Skriniar nearly connected on a cross from fellow defender Cedric Soares, but his attempt went left of the goal.

After Mehdi Leris missed a right-foot shot high in the 16th minute, Politano took his first crack at goal in the 20th with a strong shot outside the box. However, Adrian Semper was able to save the shot in the center of goal.

Borja Valero smartly found Radja Nainggolan with a header in the area, but Nainggolan could not get clear of Chievo’s defense with his attempt in the 22nd minute.

Perisic had a pair of shots off the mark in the 28th- and 32nd minute as Inter started to increase its pressure on Chievo’s defense.

Politano found Miranda in the center of the area with a cross, but the Brazilian had his header attempt saved in the 33rd minute.

It was Politano who finally got Inter on the board in the 39th minute when Skriniar played the ball from Inter’s half up to Perisic. Perisic dribbled around a pair of Chievo defenders and found Politano who clanked his effort off the right post and into the back of the net.

Skriniar had one last opportunity in the first half when his right-footed shot from outside the area missed to the right.

In the first half, thanks to Chievo’s playing style, Inter controlled 75 percent of the possession and managed nine shots, with four on target. Chievo had just two shots with neither coming near goal.

The second half was much like the first with Inter controlling possession due to the fact that Chievo was content sitting back and playing defense.

Despite that, it was Emanuel Vignato who shot first for Chievo in the 53rd minute, but his shot was blocked away.

Four minutes later, Politano nearly made it a double with a left-footed shot that was saved in the bottom corner by Semper.

Perisic started to get more active in the offense with a saved shot in the 57th minute and another in the 64th.

Chievo was dealt a blow in the 76th minute when Nicola Rigoni was shown his second yellow of the night, forcing the Gialloblu to play with 10 men for the last 14 minutes of the match.

Mauro Icardi – who started up front in lieu of Lautaro Martinez – had his best chance of the night with a header from the center of the area that sailed over the top bar of the goal in the 78th minute. Following the miss, he was substituted for Martinez.

In the 86th minute, Inter finally secured the win after Cedric Soares missed right with a shot off from the side. But, Perisic connected with a shot that went right under a diving Semper, to put Inter up 2-0.

The Nerazzurri closed the match with 24 shots – 10 on goal – while Chievo had just five shots with none of them close to target.

Inter have two more matches with a chase for Champions League qualification not secure. They return to the pitch when they travel to face Napoli at 2:30 p.m. EDT May 19 and will close out the season at home with Empoli on May 26.

The final match of the season could prove to be the decider as Empoli continue to fight off relegation and Inter battle for the Champions League.
