Its defense is one of the top-rated in both Serie A and Europe, but Inter Milan are hoping to add even more strength to its backline.
However, in order to do that, someone will likely have to be sacrificed.
That sacrifice may come in the way of Henrique Dalbert.
Thus far, Dalbert has been less-than-stellar for Inter since joining the club in 2017 from OGC Nice of Ligue 1. He’s made just 11 appearances in all competitions this season, logging one assist in those minutes.
According to Calciomercato, Inter sporting director Piero Auslio nearly sold Dalbert back to Nice last summer, but “diplomatic disagreements” over a resale value caused the deal to fall through.
It would make sense for Inter to part ways with Dalbert for the aforementioned reason of not really living up to the expectations had by the club. Inter paid nearly €21 million for the player in 2017 and he has never really performed to justify that expense. His market value has plateaued at €12 million, according to Transfermarkt.
His departure could pave an easier road for Inter to pick up Ajax Amsterdam’s Nicolas Tagliafico or even Manchester United’s Matteo Darmian – both players rumored to be exiting their respective clubs at the end of the season.
An easier pick would be Darmian, who has been linked to the Nerazzurri for the past two transfer seasons.
If Inter sell Dalbert, which defender should they sign this summer?
This poll is closed
Matteo Darmian (Manchester United). He is a steal for the price and would work well on the back line.
Nicolas Tagliafico (Ajax Amsterdam). He may be a little more expensive, but he would be a great starting full-back.
Neither. There are better options out there.
Neither. Inter should keep Dalbert and continue to develop him into the system.
Darmian signed with the Red Devils four years ago by then-manager Louis van Gaal from Torino. He nearly moved to Juventus last year, but the fee became the biggest issue. This season, Darmian has made just seven appearances for Manchester United.
Since United have taken their 12-month option on Darmian, they will expect a fee for his transfer. However, recent reports suggest that could be only around €10 million, which would be a bargain for the 29-year-old Italian.
Tagliafico, on the other hand, has had a fantastic season with Ajax, moving the team to within one home match from the UEFA Champions League finals.
The biggest issue for Inter is the fee, which could be in the neighborhood of €35 million or more. The Argentina international has five goals and six assists in 42 appearances for the Dutch side this season. He has drawn interest from other clubs, and it is possible he stays with Ajax.
Tagliafico is the better overall defender, but Darmian is much cheaper and has Serie A experience.
If Inter sell Dalbert, and I believe they should, those proceeds would be a windfall if they get Darmian, or they could be used to help with the higher fee of Tagliafico.
