Inter has announced that Henrikh Mkhitaryan will be out for the next 2-3 weeks after suffering a strain to his left thigh.

The Armenian played 33 minutes in Inter’s season opener against Lecce as a substitute but failed to make much of a difference in place of Marcelo Brozovic. That was the story of his preseason as well, where he seemed to struggle to find a place in Inter’s system. The 33-year-old is still shaping up to be an important depth piece for the Nerazzurri and will usually be the first name off the bench in midfield. Simone Inzaghi will have to make do without him in Inter’s upcoming matches against Spezia, Lazio, Cremonese, and possibly Milan. On the plus side, the Nerazzurri have just one game a week until Mkhitaryan should return and if help is needed in midfield, Kristjan Asllani will get a chance to shine. This doesn’t bode well for Mkhitaryan, however, and another injury-prone veteran midfielder on high wages is just about the last thing Inter needs.
