Inter Milan striker and captain Mauro Icardi’s backheel strike against Sampdoria was voted by the public as the Goal of the Year at the Gran Gala’ del Calcio in Milan.

The Gran Gala’ is essentially Italy’s version of the PFA Awards.

It was the first award of the night, but Icardi said maybe the fans were wrong about the award when he went to accept it.

“Personally, I think my goal against Milan was better, but thank you to everyone who voted for me,” he said.

Additionally, Icardi received the most player votes at the end of the evening (Oscar Del Calcio AIC), nudging out new teammate Radja Nainggolan.

The Italian Players Association voted on the Serie A team of 2017-18 and it was dominated by Juventus.

However, Joao Cancelo — who played with Inter last season before being scooped up by Juventus this season — made the squad along with Icardi and Nainggolan. Icardi’s co-capocannoniere winner Ciro Immobile of Lazio was also named to the team.

Juventus manager Max Allegri was named Coach of the Year while Gianluca Rocchi was Referee of the Year and Brescia’s Sandro Tonali was named best player in Serie B.

Serie A Team of 2018: Alisson (Roma); Cancelo (Inter), Koulibaly (Napoli), Chiellini (Juventus), Alex Sandro (Juventus); Pjanic (Juventus), Milinkovic-Savic (Lazio), Nainggolan (Roma); Dybala (Juventus); Icardi (Inter), Immobile (Lazio).
