Just to make sure the first hat trick wasn’t just a fluke in front of Inter Milan director Piero Ausilio and Argentina national team coach Jorge Sampaoli, Racing Club’s Lautaro Martinez drilled another three-goal performance this week in the Copa Libertadores.
Martinez, who has reportedly finalized a deal to join Inter Milan next season scored his triple against Brazilian club Cruzeiro, one of the favorites to win South America’s biggest club trophy.
His first delivery came in the 13th minute on a tap in from a free kick that seemed to freeze Cruzeiro’s defense in its place.
Cruzeiro was able to respond in short order after Giorgian De Arrascaeta headed home the tying goal minutes later. But, Martinez struck again in the first half, this time leveling a ball into the bottom corner of the net.
In the second half, Martinez picked up his third on a header delivered from Ricardo Centurion’s corner kick.
The hat trick comes at a good time for Martinez as Sampaoli is preparing to name his 2018 World Cup squad sometime this week or next.
One thing is for sure, if Inter has finalized the deal for this kid, he has the potential to be a legitimate big league threat in Serie A and could be a huge boost to the offense for Spalletti and crew.
He is athletic and quick with smart ball control. He seems to be adept at creating chances as well, which is something the Nerazzurri have missed in recent matches.
Reports suggest Inter and Martinez have agreed to a €20.2 million deal to bring the striker to the San Siro next season.
