So, if the fact that Inter Milan was squaring off against a rival wasn’t enough, there is way more to look at.
Let’s start with the obvious.
When the Viola and Nerazzurri kick off the season Sunday, Borja Valero won’t be wearing purple — which is sticking in the craw of just about every Fiorentina fan to this day. Oh, and Matias Vecino … also not wearing purple.
Both will be in black and blue. Toss in the fact that the Viola dealt away Federico Bernardeshi and Gonzalo Rodríguez and Fiorentina will be fairly new come Sunday.
If that wasn’t enough, Stefano Pioli — the former Inter boss — will be sporting purple (not really, but you get the idea) as the head of Fiorentina.
In addition to Vecino and Valero, the Viola are also without Riccardo Saponara who is out with a leg injury and Federico Chiesa who is suspended. However, Milan Badelj and Marco Benassi could prove to be strong attacking options along with forward Khouma Babacar as Inter Milan will likely be testing new defenders Dalbert and Milan Skriniar.
For Luciano Spalletti, he will have strong attacking options like Ivan Perisic, Éder and Mauro Icardi — although Icardi has been hampered with a preseason injury.
In the middle, Joao Mario, Valero and Roberto Gagliardini could get starting nods.
Now, Inter fans are hoping for a strong start by Spalletti and the gang and what better way to do that than at home against what seems to be a depleted Fiorentina squad.
Imagine how much Valero and Vecino want to win this game. If that translates on the field, Inter could come out guns blazing while the Viola struggle to find cohesion.
Regardless, it is nearing game day!!
